 EARTHTIME-EU 2018 – Training Workshop No. 1

“The chronology of the Stratigraphic Record”

 Saturday/Sunday 7 / 8 April 2018, University of Vienna

A two-day classroom based course for the EARTHTIME community will take place on the weekend before EGU. The course is addressed to young scientists at MSc, PhD and post-doctoral level.

Saturday April 7, 2017 – 08:30-17:00

Intro – Setting the scene: time in stratigraphy, depth versus time.
Fundamentals of radio-isotopic dating and application to the stratigraphic record
Fundamentals of biostratigraphy and biochronology
Fundamentals of cyclostratigraphy and astrochronology
Fundamentals of magnetic polarity reversal timescales
Fundamentals of Age Model construction

Sunday April 8, 2017 – 08:30-15:00

Integration of stratigraphic records:
Discussion I: Marine examples, near-continuous deposition
Discussion II: Terrestrial examples, punctuated deposition
Discussion III: Precambrian examples, stratigraphy relying on chemostratigraphy
Discussion IV: What are the current limits to geochronological resolution?
Presentations from students’ research projects (~3 minutes each)

The lecture notes will be published in a condensed form and will be accessible on an online platform.
